Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed grief at the tragic train accident in Agbor, Ika South Local Council of the state, which claimed four lives and left several passengers injured.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ekpen Ahon, the governor commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.
Describing the accident as heartbreaking and unfortunate, Oborevwori said the loss of lives was a painful tragedy not only for the affected families but also the entire state. He said the state government had promptly mobilised relevant authorities to the scene for immediate assistance to victims, and to ensure effective emergency response.
According to the statement, the governor had immediately directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, alongside the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Council Areas, to proceed to the accident scene and coordinate rescue operations.
Oborevwori also commended security agencies for their swift response to the emergency, stating that the commissioner of police personally visited the scene and deployed adequate security personnel to protect passengers’ luggage and other valuables while rescue efforts lasted.
The statement further disclosed that injured victims were promptly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while passengers who escaped unhurt were transported to safety within the town, while the remains of the four victims were deposited in a mortuary.
Also, the Chairman of Ika North-East Local Council, Monday Odigwe, disclosed that 13 of the 35 victims were admitted at the Central Hospital, Agbor, 12 others were receiving care at the General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, and the remaining 10 were being treated at the General Hospital, Owa-Alero.
