Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his Rivers State counterpart, Siminalayi Fubara, have congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, expressing optimism that the nation’s democratic journey would usher in greater prosperity and development for the country and all citizens.
Oborevwori, in a statement issued yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, commended Nigerians for their unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and constitutional governance despite the challenges confronting the nation.
The governor described June 12 as a historic date that symbolises the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their quest for democratic rule, noting that the sacrifices of past heroes and pro-democracy activists should never be forgotten.
According to him, Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress, strengthen democratic institutions, and recognise the collective responsibility of citizens and leaders in building a more united and prosperous country.
Oborevwori said democracy remains the best form of government because it guarantees the people’s right to participate in the governance process and promotes accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and leaders at all levels, while embracing peace, tolerance, and national unity as essential ingredients for sustainable development.
ON his part, the Governor of Rivers State, Fubara, reaffirmed that democracy remains the most effective system of government for Nigeria, given the country’s rich diversity of ethnic, religious and cultural identities.
In a goodwill message to Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Fubara said June 12 represents far more than a historic date, noting that it embodies the enduring struggle, sacrifice and collective aspiration of Nigerians for freedom, justice and representative governance.
The governor extended felicitations to Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora, paying tribute to the heroes and heroines of the democratic struggle, particularly the late Chief MKO Abiola, his wife, Kudirat Abiola, and others whose sacrifices helped secure the democratic freedoms enjoyed today.
He said: “June 12 is a reminder of the price paid for the democracy we enjoy today. The sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola and many other patriots laid the foundation for the democratic journey we continue to pursue.
“Their commitment to the principle that power must ultimately reside with the people remains a source of inspiration for every generation of Nigerians.”
Fubara noted that 33 years after the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, Nigeria’s democratic journey has continued to evolve despite challenges and setbacks.
