Gowon urges Nigerians to embrace unity, respect across ethnic, religious divides

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), on Saturday called on Nigerians to uphold the values of unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence despite the country’s ethnic and religious diversity.

Gowon made the appeal while chairing the public presentation of three books in honour of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), as part of activities marking his 84th birthday celebration under the theme, “The Legacy of a Statesman @ 84.”

The elder statesman stressed the need for citizens, particularly young Nigerians, to embrace the virtues of patriotism, tolerance and service to the nation, describing them as essential ingredients for national cohesion and sustainable development.

Highlighting the importance of dignity in labour, peace, democracy and good governance, Gowon urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from Abdulsalami’s exemplary leadership, commitment to justice and unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s unity.

He said the former military leader’s record of service and integrity had earned him widespread respect both within and outside the country.

Gowon disclosed that his admiration and respect for Abdulsalami informed his decision to accept the invitation to chair the event, describing the celebrant as one of Nigeria’s most trusted statesmen.

According to him, Abdulsalami remains a highly sought-after and credible mediator whose interventions have continued to promote peace, dialogue and conflict resolution across Africa and beyond.

The former Head of State commended Abdulsalami’s enduring contributions to nation-building and democratic governance, noting that his legacy offers valuable lessons for present and future generations of leaders.
