NYSC suspends 2026 Batch B orientation in Niger
One person has been reported killed and several classrooms set ablaze by Boko Haram terrorists when they attacked the Government Day Secondary School in Kautikari Village, Chibok Local Council Area of Borno State.

Confirming the incident to The Guardian on Sunday, the Education Secretary of Chibok Local Council Area, Malah Kyari, said the incident occurred at about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday and affected the junior secondary school section of the school.

“I can confirm that the insurgents attacked the Kautikari community yesterday, killed one person and set ablaze one block containing five classrooms and an office at Kautikari JSS,” he said.

The Public Relations Officer of Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, also confirmed the incident, stating that security forces repelled the attackers as they wanted to infiltrate Maiduguri at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday.

According to him, the suspected insurgents faced strong resistance from joint security forces, who averted further losses, with intensive patrols now ongoing in the area.

Also confirming the attack, Samaila Manza, who is the zonal inspector for Local Government and Emirate Affairs in charge of Bama, Chibok, Gwoza, Askira/Uba and Damboa, said he was informed that terrorists attacked the village, but was yet to verify the actual extent of the damage caused.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the suspension of the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course for prospective corps members deployed to Niger State.

In a notice on its official X handle yesterday, the scheme said the suspension was due to ongoing renovation work at the orientation camp.

The statement added that while the NYSC management regrets all inconveniences to the affected PCMs and their parents, the affected PCMs would “be contacted at short notice on where and when to report for their orientation course.”

The 2026 Batch B Stream I orientation exercise officially commenced on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, scheduled to run until Tuesday, June 30, 2026, nationwide.

In the meantime, the Niger State Police Command has confirmed the killing of three people at Pissa Village in Borgu Local Council Area by suspected bandits.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the bandits attacked the village at about 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, adding that some houses were set ablaze during the attack, and that the military also engaged the bandits, though further details were still sketchy.

However, local sources said that a large convoy of armed bandits, estimated at over 100 and riding on motorcycles, attacked the Pissa community in a coordinated assault, thereby forcing residents to flee their homes for safety.
