Aspirants of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 elections in Enugu State on Monday rejected any list of Candidates put forward by the Okwesilieze Nwodo-led leadership in the state, alleging that such is concocted without regard to the common good of the party.
They also passed a vote of no confidence on some leaders of the party in the state including Nwodo, accusing them of anti-party activities and foisting candidates that can not win elections in the state.
The Aspirants urged the national leadership to intervene and restore confidence among members by setting up an independent committee to supervise the activities of the party in Enugu State, to ensure that credible candidates emerge from the party and in strict adherence to the guidelines for 2027 election primaries and extant electoral laws.
Rising from their meeting in Enugu, they stated that they took the position because there was no valid primary election conducted in the State.
A statement released after the meeting signed by 30 Aspirants for various elective positions in the elections, stated that no direct primary nor consensus arrangement took place between aspirants and stakeholders as prescribed by the party’s guidelines for 2027 election primaries in tandem with extant Electoral Act of 2026 (as amended).
The Aspirants observed with grave concern that a small clique hijacked the party structures and truncated the party primaries in the State, thereby excluding the majority of stakeholders, aspirants, and grassroots members from participating in critical decisions affecting the future of the party.
“That at no time in the entire primary process did His Excellency, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo meet with aspirants and stakeholders towards a consensus arrangement as stipulated in the party guidelines and extant electoral laws”, they said
They passed a vote of no confidence on the State Party leader, His Excellency Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo; Mathias Omeh, Major-General Fidelis Azinta (rtd) and Mr. John Nwokeabia for an alleged “high-handedness, gross abuse of trust, partiality, lack of accountability in the affairs of the party in Enugu State, anti party activities, including promoting aspirants who can not win elections”.
The Aspirants condemned the excessive financial extortion and exploitation of aspirants within the party in Enugu State, adding that the entire nomination process lacked transparency, accountability and shrouded in manipulation, irregularities and conduct inconsistent with the values and principles upon which the party was founded.
They unequivocally stated that the primary process clearly undermines party guidelines for 2027 election primaries and contravenes the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended).
They also urged the national leadership to grant an urgent audience to a delegation of aggrieved aspirants from the three Senatorial Zones of Enugu State to enable them formally present their concerns, grievances, observations and recommendations.
“Convene a high-level stakeholders’ meeting involving the National Leader of the Party, members of the National Working Committee, state leaders, aspirants, critical stakeholders, and representatives of the three Senatorial Zones to address the issues threatening party unity and stability in Enugu State,” they said
The Forum reaffirmed committment and loyalty to the National Leadership of the party under the National Leader, His Excellency Seriake Dickson, the Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, and his running mate, His Excellency, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
