To draw attention to escalating insecurity and surge in kidnappings and killings in Nigeria, the Chairman of World Igbo Congress (WIC), Dr Festus Okere, has mandated the Vice Chairman, Mazi Basil Onwukwe, to lead a delegation to Washington D.C for a rally.

The rally, which is being organised in conjunction with the Save Nigeria Advocacy Group, led by Stephen Osemweigie, will raise awareness of the challenges faced by Christian communities and other citizens due to violent Islamic jihadist insurgency, and demand decisive action from the President Bola Tinubu administration to urgently put an end to the crisis.

The event will kick off on June 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. and wraps up on the 23rd, with an awards ceremony honouring deserving U.S. Congress members who have made significant contributions to raising public awareness regarding insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

Onwukwe, on behalf of the Igbo apex body, reiterated its unwavering commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the atrocities committed in their homeland face justice. This includes exposing the financiers behind these heinous crimes.

He also raised concerns about the government’s strategy of integrating so-called repentant Boko Haram terrorists into the security forces, but harassing and detaining youths agitating for good governance.

WIC said: “The persistent threat of mass killings and kidnappings calls for proper investigation of the Nigerian government and its security apparatus. It is imperative that we stand together with the government of the United States in support of this cause and continue to work tirelessly to protect the lives and properties of our good people.”
