Ondo cautions FID over ‘commando-style’ operations, panic inducing raids

Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa

Urges IGP to rein in special ops, units

… Demands adherence to protocols, professional conduct

The Ondo State Government has expressed concerns over what it described as “commando-style” operations by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) across the state.

According to the state government, the tactics employed by the FID personnel during operations in the state have created panic and anxiety among citizens.

In a statement issued on Monday, the commissioner for information and orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the government acknowledged the constitutional mandate of security agencies to investigate and combat criminal activities.

However, the government insisted that such operations must adhere to established protocols and prioritize public safety and confidence.

Ajanaku noted that the manner in which recent operations were conducted is creating unnecessary anxiety among law-abiding residents, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere for which Ondo State is renowned.

While stressing that the development has compounded existing worries among citizens already grappling with broader national security challenges, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, was urged to take immediate and appropriate steps to regulate the activities of specialized units operating within the state.

The Ondo State Government further urged the police hierarchy to ensure that proper procedures are strictly followed in the conduct of all security operations, stressing that where actionable intelligence exists, official channels of communication and coordination with state authorities must be activated to prevent avoidable tension.

The statement read in parts, “The state government therefore calls on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to take appropriate steps to regulate the activities of specialized units operating across the state and ensure that proper procedures are strictly adhered to in the conduct of security operations.

‎”The government states wherever actionable intelligence exists, official channels of communication and coordination with relevant state authorities should be activated to avoid creating avoidable tension among the populace.

“The government reiterates that it will not oppose legitimate security operations aimed at protecting citizens and combating crime. However, such operations must be carried out professionally, responsibly, and in line with established operational standards that inspire public confidence rather than fear.

“The Ondo State Government assures residents of its continued commitment to their safety and wellbeing and urges them to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.

“Government will continue to engage relevant security authorities to ensure that security operations within the state are conducted in a manner that respects due process and preserves public peace.”
