The Yobe State Police Command has arrested two suspects over the alleged killing of a newborn baby girl in Damaturu, the state capital.
The command also condemned the incident, describing it as a heinous act of violence against an infant, and reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of children and other vulnerable persons across the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Damaturu, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the command was deeply concerned about incidents involving abandoned newborn babies, stressing that every child has an inherent right to life, protection, care and dignity under the law.
He warned that anyone found culpable of violating those rights would face the full weight of the law.
According to him, operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit responded to a distress call at about 4:10 p.m. on June 23, 2026, regarding the alleged killing of a newborn baby girl and the concealment of her remains.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a female suspect, who recently gave birth to the baby, was allegedly involved in an incident in which the child was strangled,” Abdulkarim said.
He added that the baby’s remains were allegedly concealed in a box and abandoned behind a mosque in the Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu.
The police spokesperson said swift intervention by the command led to the arrest of two suspects, who are currently assisting investigators.
He noted that the case remains under investigation as the command continues to gather evidence and ensure that justice is served.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, described the alleged killing as a “heinous and inhuman act,” stressing that every human life is precious and must be protected.
The police commissioner warned that the command would not tolerate violence against children or other vulnerable persons and assured that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
