As Matchday Two continues in the 2026 World Cup, the Round of 32 picture is beginning to take shape.

Two of the tournament’s three co-hosts, the United States and Mexico, have already clinched their respective groups and will advance to the knockout stage. Canada has picked up four points through their first two matches and face Switzerland, which will decide the Group B winner.

England were expected to join the group after yesterday’s clash with Ghana. A win for either of the teams will take them to an unassailable six points, but a draw will suffice, meaning that their last first-round games’ results would determine the winner of the group.

There will be 32 teams advancing to the knockout round following the group stage. The top two teams from each group will advance, along with the eight best third-place teams.

The teams already qualified for the Round of 32 are the United States, Mexico, Germany, Argentina, France and Norway.

The U.S. beat Paraguay and Australia to take Group D with one match (against Türkiye) to spare. They are locked into a July 1 knockout stage date against the third-place team from either Group B, E, F, I or J at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Mexico posted clean sheets against South Africa and South Korea to win Group A. They will remain in Mexico and take on a third-place team from Group C, E, F, H, or I on June 30 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Germany advanced to the Round of 32 after back-to-back wins over Curaçao and Cote d’Ivoire. Then Ecuador and Curaçao battled to an uneventful draw, clinching Group E for the Germans.

They’ll face a third-place team from Group A, B, C, D or F on June 29 in Boston.

A win over Austria on Monday secured Argentina’s place in the Round of 32, and Algeria’s later victory over Jordan clinched first place in Group J. Argentina will close out the group stage against Jordan on Saturday before facing the Group H runner-up in Miami on July 3.

With wins over Iraq and Senegal on Monday, France and Norway have both clinched spots in the knockout round, making Group I the first to send multiple teams through. The final group-stage clash between Les Bleus and the Røde, Hvite, Blå on Friday in Boston will now decide top spot, with seeding and a potentially easier Round of 32 path on the line.

The teams already eliminated from the championship are Haiti, Türkiye, Tunisia, and
Jordan.
