NPFL: Barau FC’s remarkable rise highlights Shawall Barau Jibrin’s leadership

Barau FC capped a remarkable 2025/26 season with an eighth-place NPFL finish, a Kano FA Cup title and growing recognition under the leadership of club president Shawall Barau Jibrin.

The recent success of Barau Football Club in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has further reinforced the significance of the recognition bestowed on its president, Alhaji Shawall Barau Jibrin, who emerged winner of the Sports and Wellness category at the CEOs Network Africa Awards 2025.

Shawall, widely regarded as the youngest club president in the NPFL, received the award in December 2025 after emerging ahead of several notable nominees in the sports and wellness sector. The honour recognised his growing influence in sports administration, youth development and community engagement.

Months after receiving the award, Barau FC has continued its impressive ascent in Nigerian football, completing a remarkable journey from the lower divisions to the country’s top-flight league.

In its maiden NPFL campaign, the Kano-based club exceeded expectations by finishing eighth on the league table, establishing itself as one of the surprise packages of the 2025/26 football season.

The club’s achievements extended beyond league competition, as the “Maliya Boys” clinched the Kano FA Cup and advanced to the quarter-finals of the President Federation Cup, further underlining their growing profile on the national football scene.

Stakeholders within the football community have attributed much of the club’s success to the leadership and vision of Shawall, whose administration has focused on strengthening the club’s structure and professionalism.

One of the key moves under his leadership was the appointment of former Super Eagles defender Dominic Iorfa as the club’s General Manager, a decision widely viewed as part of efforts to build a sustainable football institution.

Beyond football, Shawall has also gained recognition for his contributions to youth empowerment, peacebuilding and community development. In November 2024, he was honoured with the International Peace Medal Award by the International Organisation of UN Volunteers and conferred with the title of Global Peace Diplomat.

His philanthropic activities have included support for educational initiatives and the distribution of relief materials to vulnerable families across Northern Nigeria.

Observers, however, note that Barau FC’s rapid growth has also benefited from the support of its Grand Patron and Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin. The senator’s commitment to youth empowerment and sports development is widely regarded as a key factor in the club’s emergence as a competitive force in Nigerian football.

With a successful debut NPFL season, domestic cup triumph and increasing national recognition, Barau FC has become one of the country’s emerging football success stories, while Shawall Barau Jibrin’s award-winning leadership continues to attract attention within and beyond the sports sector.
