Providing Stability In Unstable Times: A task for fatherhood

By Stephen Wolemonwu

“We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord…” Psalm 78:4.

Introduction
We live in a time of great instability. In a world marked by instability —economic uncertainty, moral confusion, and cultural decay — fathers and mentors are called to be stabilisers in their homes and environment. Psalm 78:4 reminds us that the antidote to societal collapse is generational faithfulness. Fathers must become storytellers of God’s mighty acts, ensuring that their children inherit not fear, but faith.

Economies rise and fall, morals are shifting, families are breaking down, and truth is often traded for lies. In such a world, children are growing up confused, fearful and uncertain about the future.

But God has given fathers a sacred assignment: to be anchors of stability in their homes. Psalm 78:4 declares: “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord…” This is not just a suggestion — it is a divine mandate. Fathers must ensure that the next generation knows the faithfulness of God.

Fathers As Custodians Of Memory

“We will not hide them…” Fathers are custodians of memory. Silence about God’s works is a form of hiding. If we do not speak, our children will not know.

Illustration: Israelite fathers told the story of the Exodus — how God parted the Red Sea — so their children would never forget that God delivers.

Application: Fathers, today, must recount their own testimonies: how God provided, healed, protected or saved. Your story is your child’s inheritance.
Fathers As Teachers Of Truth

“…But tell to the coming generation…” Teaching is not optional; it is generational stewardship. Fathers must actively teach truth in a world full of lies.

Illustration: A father explaining why honesty matters, even when corruption seems normal, is shaping his child’s worldview.

Application: Lead family devotions, explain scripture and correct false cultural narratives. Do not outsource this responsibility to schools or even the church — the home is the first pulpit.

Fathers As Stabilisers Of Faith
“…The glorious deeds of the Lord…” Children gain stability when they see God’s faithfulness in their father’s life. Fathers must model reliance on God, not fear.

Note; fathers who prays with their children during financial hardship teaches them that stability comes from God, not wealth. The fact is obvious, in unstable times, fathers must demonstrate faith in action —praying openly, trusting God visibly, and showing peace in crisis.

Fathers As Prophets To The Next Generation
Fathers must declare destiny and hope, not despair. Testimonies are prophetic — they shape the future by reminding children of God’s past. Jacob blessed his sons, speaking words that shaped the destiny of tribes. In the same way fathers must speak blessings over their children. Affirm their identity in Christ. Declare that they will stand firm in faith, even when society decays.

Contemporary Approach
• Digital Age: Teach discernment; remind children that God’s truth outlasts trending lies.
• Economic Instability: Share testimonies of provision; model contentment and trust.

• Moral Decay: Stand firm as examples of integrity, showing that righteousness is possible in a corrupt world.

• Family Life: Make storytelling of God’s deeds a tradition — bedtime stories, family devotions, testimonies at meals.

Conclusion
Psalm 78:4 is a call for fathers to be living bridges between past faithfulness and future hope. In unstable times, stability is not found in politics, wealth or culture; it is found in fathers who refuse to hide God’s deeds, but boldly declare them to their children.

I, therefore, charge us finally: Fathers, your testimony is your child’s inheritance. Your voice is their anchor. Your faith is their stability.
Closing Appeal

Fathers, recommit yourself today to being storytellers of God’s faithfulness. Make your home a sanctuary of truth and stability. Let your children hear, see and feel the reality of God through your life.

Closing Prayer
“Lord, raise fathers who will not hide Your works from their children. Empower them to be anchors of stability in unstable times. May their testimonies become the inheritance of generations, yet unborn. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
