The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of two persons, including a recruit candidate and a bus conductor, in a road accident involving candidates for the 91 Regular Recruits Intake (RRI).
It also disclosed that a soldier, 13 candidates and the bus driver sustained varying degrees of injuries in the collision involving a trailer. The candidates were being conveyed from Obinze Barracks in Imo State to the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria when the accident occurred.
In a statement, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Enugu, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, said the accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m., about two kilometres from Obinze Barracks along the Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway.
According to the statement, the bereaved families have been informed accordingly, and “the critically injured victims were immediately evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, while others are receiving treatment at the Brigade Medical Centre.”
Ayeni added that the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division, Major-General Oluremi Fadairo, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls, while also wishing the injured personnel and candidates a speedy and full recovery.
Meanwhile, the command disclosed that an investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident, adding that arrangements have also been made to ensure the safe movement of the remaining candidates to the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria.
