Anchoring the African leather industry at the intersection of cultural heritage and cutting-edge global innovation, Lagos Leather Fair (LLF) 2026 built a roadmap for the African leather sector on technological adaptation, structural scaling, and uncompromised craftsmanship.

The two-day fair which was held at Ecobank Pan African Centre, Lagos last weekend featured thought-leadership sessions that challenged traditional boundaries.

Industry stalwarts, such as Abubakar Sanusi, Niyi Abiola, Tejumola Maurice-Diya, and Isi Braimoh, led a deep-dive panel discussion titled ‘From Local Roots to Global Reach: Building a Scalable Leather Brand’.

During the Fireside Chat moderated by Olawoyin Samuel, the conversation focused heavily on overcoming supply chain bottlenecks, meeting rigorous international quality standards, and leveraging cross-border trade agreements to position African brands in luxury global retail spaces.

The Masterclass, a forward-looking session on The Future of Leather Working: AI-Assisted Techniques and Innovations by Elijah Moses, explored how artificial intelligence, digital pattern-making, and smart manufacturing are transforming production speeds, reducing material waste, and boosting sustainability.

Operating concurrently, the Maker’s Bench and the LLF Atelier offered live, hands-on demonstrations of traditional and modern leather-crafting techniques. Attendees witnessed firsthand the technical mastery, rigorous tooling, and intricate processes required to transition raw hides into high-end consumer goods.

Day two delivered a high-impact, meticulously curated schedule designed to empower local designers with the strategic and technical tools necessary to scale their businesses globally.

The highlight of the grand finale was the LLF Awards, a ceremony that honoured individuals and institutions whose exceptional contributions, design excellence, and commercial viability continue to elevate the regional leather value chain. The distinguished LLF2026 awardees recognised during the evening include: Women’s Footwear Brand of the Year (Presented by Mr. Eke James) – Mona Matthews; Men’s Footwear Brand of the year (Presented by Abubakar Sanusi) – January by Wande; Excellence in Artisanal Craftsmanship Award (Presented by Mr Eke James) – HankerandReech Leather Goods; Handbag Designer of the Year (Presented by Mr Eke James) – Nichole by Haguanna; Best Use of Social Media (Presented by Mr Bankole Olayebi) – Maliko; Emerging Leather Designer of the Year (Presented by Mr Bankole Olayebi) – Elastan Signature; Brand of the year.
