The Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s inland waterways infrastructure in line with international maritime best practices.
Shagari said the government remained focused on improving the nation’s water transport system to enhance safety, efficiency and unlock opportunities in the blue economy through strategic partnerships with global maritime institutions.
He made the remarks during a high-level meeting with the President of the World Maritime University (WMU), Professor Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., on the sidelines of the ongoing International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council Meeting in London.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders in the global maritime sector to discuss collaboration in maritime education, inland waterways development, capacity building and sustainable transportation systems.
According to Shagari, the Federal Government has continued to prioritise reforms aimed at improving safety, boosting operational efficiency and expanding economic activities along Nigeria’s inland waterways.
He noted that collaboration with leading maritime academic institutions would equip Nigerian professionals with the technical expertise needed to address emerging challenges in the sector.
The NIWA Board Chairman also stressed the importance of knowledge exchange, research collaboration and professional training in advancing Nigeria’s maritime ambitions and strengthening the country’s position in the global maritime industry.
In his remarks, Professor Mejia reaffirmed the World Maritime University’s commitment to supporting member states through education, research and capacity development initiatives.
He commended Nigeria’s growing commitment to strengthening its maritime sector and expressed the university’s readiness to deepen cooperation with relevant institutions in the country.
According to Mejia, sustainable growth in the maritime industry depends largely on sustained investment in human capital, innovation and strict adherence to international standards.
Shagari said both leaders will explore opportunities for expanding educational programmes, specialised training and institutional partnerships to support the long-term development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The meeting was part of a series of strategic engagements taking place during the IMO Council session, where maritime leaders from around the world are deliberating on policies to promote safe, secure and environmentally sustainable shipping operations.
