Police probe deadly attack on Rivers community as council chairman seeks peace

Rivers State Police Command

The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the Sunday night attack on Olua Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emohua Local Government Area, pledging to uncover the circumstances surrounding the violence and apprehend those responsible.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, disclosed this while responding to the incident, which was allegedly carried out by gunmen suspected to have come from Bukuma Community in Degema Local Government Area.
Agabe said the investigation would focus on establishing the circumstances surrounding the attack, identifying the perpetrators and ensuring they are brought to justice.

As part of efforts to assess the aftermath of the attack, the Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Chidi Lloyd, visited the affected community alongside security personnel.
During the visit, Lloyd inspected homes and other property damaged during the attack and commiserated with residents over their losses, assuring them that steps were being taken to restore peace and security.

Speaking to journalists after touring the community, the council chairman said preliminary investigations indicated that two fishermen from Bukuma Community in Degema Local Government Area were found dead in a river about a week ago.
According to Lloyd, fishing nets belonging to the deceased were later recovered from the homes of some residents of Olua.

He, however, cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, stressing that the recovery of the fishing nets alone does not establish that those in whose homes they were found were responsible for the killings.
He said the incident appeared to have heightened tensions between the neighbouring communities, prompting immediate intervention by local authorities to prevent further violence.

Lloyd disclosed that he and his counterpart in Degema Local Government Area had initiated discussions aimed at restoring peaceful coexistence between the two communities and preventing reprisals.
The council chairman also appealed to residents of Olua Rumuodogo 2 not to abandon their homes in the wake of the attack.

He urged them to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring them that measures were being put in place to restore normalcy while police investigations continue.
