Retired police officers across Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF), have declared a nationwide peaceful protest to press President Bola Tinubu to immediately sign into law the bill removing the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The ex-officers warned that they would not abandon their campaign until the president assents to what they described as the total exit bill, insisting that thousands of retired policemen have been pushed into poverty, illness and avoidable deaths by the current pension regime.
In a letter of July 3, 2026, to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, the retirees appealed for his intervention, arguing that his support could prove decisive in securing presidential assent to the legislation already passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
Signed by the PROF National Coordinator, CSP Raphael Irowainu (rtd.), and National Secretary, Dr Enyi Ignatius, the letter described the police officers’ life after service as a national embarrassment, stating: “The present condition of many retired police officers is painful and distressing.
“After dedicating the most productive years of their lives to safeguarding Nigeria, many retirees can no longer afford necessities, including healthcare.”
It added that the growing cases of illness, financial hardship and deaths among retired officers underscore the urgency of removing the police from the CPS.
The retirees also flayed the proposed “Option B” pension arrangement, dismissing it as a temporary fix incapable of ending what they described as decades of pension injustice.
According to them, police officers remain unfairly disadvantaged compared to personnel of the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and even the National Assembly, all of whom operate pension arrangements outside the CPS.
They argued that extending similar treatment to the police personnel is a matter of equity, justice and recognition of the enormous sacrifices that officers make in protecting lives and property.
Rallying the IGP Disu to their cause, the retirees said history would remember him as the police chief who restored dignity and financial freedom to both serving and retired officers if the bill receives presidential assent during his tenure.
The letter was copied to President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the Minister of Police Affairs, the National Security Adviser, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, among others.
