Elektron Renewables has completed the expansion of the rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja, raising the facility’s installed capacity from 600 kilowatt-peak (kWp) to approximately 1.5 megawatt-peak (MWp), in what the company says is now the largest rooftop solar installation on a shopping mall in West Africa.
The expansion added 902.4 kWp of solar capacity to the mall, one of Nigeria’s busiest retail destinations, which receives more than 500,000 visitors monthly and houses over 100 retail outlets.
The upgraded solar system is expected to supply about 70 per cent of the mall’s electricity needs while generating an estimated 110,000 kilowatt-hours of power every month, equivalent to roughly 1,320 megawatt-hours annually.
The development underscores the growing adoption of renewable energy by commercial businesses seeking to reduce energy costs, improve operational efficiency and strengthen resilience amid Nigeria’s power supply challenges. According to Elektron Renewables, distributed renewable energy is increasingly being integrated into core business infrastructure rather than serving as a supplementary power source.
Speaking on the project, Head of Elektron Renewables, Sianny Ayodele, said the installation demonstrates how renewable energy has become a strategic investment for commercial and industrial enterprises.
“Projects like Jabi Lake Mall demonstrate that renewable energy has become critical infrastructure for commercial and industrial businesses. As energy demand continues to grow and businesses seek greater cost certainty and reliability, distributed renewable energy is increasingly becoming a strategic business decision,” Ayodele said.
He added that the expansion reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering long-term value through scalable renewable energy solutions and reflects growing confidence among businesses to invest in clean energy infrastructure.
Also commenting on the project, Partner at Grene Capital and Manager of Jabi Lake Mall, Tolu Sokenu, described the investment as part of the mall’s long-term strategy to enhance asset performance and resilience.
“This project reflects how disciplined, long-term capital investment can strengthen an asset’s performance and resilience at the same time. We look for opportunities to enhance the quality and relevance of our assets in ways that create lasting value and future-proof a market-leading mall,” Sokenu said.
Elektron Renewables noted that the project reflects a broader trend of businesses incorporating renewable energy into long-term infrastructure planning to improve operational reliability while supporting sustainability goals.
The company said the Jabi Lake Mall installation illustrates the commercial viability of renewable energy in helping businesses meet current energy demands and prepare for future growth.
