The Niger State Police Command said men of its Mokwa Division arrested five suspects for alleged criminal conspiracy and theft during a routine patrol along the Mokwa Bypass Road.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the patrol team intercepted some persons loading goats into a Toyota Corolla with registration number KNT 23 HP at about 10:30 a.m. on July 7, 2026, and on interrogation, the suspects could not give a satisfactory account of themselves or the goats.

Further investigation revealed that the animals had been stolen within Mokwa town and were being transported to Bida for sale.

Abiodun listed the suspects as Ramatu Yahaya, 24, Isyaku Yahaya, 15, Danjuma Danladi, 31, and Mohammad Adamu, 30 – all of Bida, and Amina Usman, 30, of Mokwa, all of whom he said were still being investigated to help identify and arrest other collaborators.

He added that some owners of the stolen goats had identified and retrieved their animals, while the suspects would soon be charged in court.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command said it arrested 135 suspected cultists during operations conducted to prevent violence associated with the annual 7/7 cult celebration.

The operation, involving area commanders, divisional police officers, tactical commanders and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), followed intelligence that rival cult groups had planned attacks across the state.

The raids led to the recovery of 26 firearms, 16 dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, battle axes, daggers and knives, cult insignia, assorted charms, 11 bottles of alcoholic drinks, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs, as well as six mobile phones.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged in court upon conclusion.
