SDP Intensifies Reforms, Grassroots Mobilisation Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening internal democracy, consolidating ongoing reforms and expanding its grassroots structures as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The resolution was reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where leaders reviewed progress made so far and outlined strategies to reposition the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Speaking after the meeting, the National Chairman of the SDP, Professor Sadiq Gombe, said the party had recorded significant milestones within the past four months, including the successful conduct of two NEC meetings, its National Convention, presidential and other primary elections, as well as efforts to strengthen party structures nationwide.

He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its cooperation with the party and reiterated the SDP’s commitment to the rule of law and internal democracy.
Gombe dismissed reports of divisions within the party, insisting that the SDP remained united and had no faction, adding that disciplinary measures taken against former officials were carried out in accordance with the party’s constitution and due process.

He urged members to remain steadfast and intensify grassroots mobilisation to position the party for success in the 2027 elections.

Also addressing journalists, the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, said the NEC reviewed the party’s organisational framework and approved measures aimed at improving efficiency and accountability.

According to him, the party has updated its constitution, strengthened its membership register and introduced new administrative procedures to improve internal governance.

Agunloye disclosed that the next phase of reforms would focus on establishing functional structures at polling unit level and training polling agents to enhance the party’s performance during future elections.

The Vice National Chairman (South), Senator Ugochukwu Uba, called on members to close ranks and work collectively towards building a stronger political platform, noting that the SDP’s manifesto remains focused on the welfare, security and economic well-being of Nigerians.

In his goodwill message, Mr. Solomon Akwashiki expressed optimism that the party would significantly improve its electoral fortunes in 2027 by winning more elective positions across the country.

Similarly, the Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum, Femi Olaniyi, urged party leaders to strengthen structures at the state, local government and ward levels while encouraging continuous voter registration, Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection and aggressive membership drives.

In her vote of thanks, the National Woman Leader, Saadatu Abdullahi, advocated greater inclusion of women in the party’s leadership and decision-making processes.

She recalled her earlier proposal for the inclusion of state and zonal women leaders in the National Executive Committee, stressing that broader female participation would further strengthen the party’s democratic credentials.

The NEC meeting ended with a renewed commitment by party leaders to deepen internal reforms, consolidate party structures and intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
