With 13 days to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Nigerian athletes are intensifying their preparations in various camps across Europe.
Although over 72 Nigerian athletes are already in the nation’s main camp in Aberdeen, the 3×3 basketball team is fine-tuning preparations at a camp in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
D’Tigers star, Ike Nwamu, will lead the 3×3 basketball team in two international friendly matches in Amsterdam before the squad departs for Glasgow.
The 3×3 basketball team qualified for the Games by finishing ahead of South Africa and other nations in a qualifying championship in Angola earlier this year.
At the training facilities in Aberdeen camp in Scotland, Team Nigeria’s boxers are also sweating it out.
Meanwhile, several of Nigeria’s foreign-based athletics stars are set to arrive in the United Kingdom any moment now.
According to Kola Daniel, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, among the top track and field stars expected are sprint sensation, Kanyinsola Ajayi, world record holder in 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, 400m star, Samuel Ogazi and Ezekiel Nathaniel.
Team Nigeria is expected to participate in ten sporting events in Glasgow, aiming to surpass the 12 gold medals the nation won at the last edition of the Games in Birmingham.
