Nasarawa Amazons Football Club have been crowned champions of the 2026 Women’s President Federation Cup after defeating Heartland Queens of Owerri in a thrilling penalty shootout at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
The final, played before enthusiastic football fans at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, highlighted the growing competitiveness and rising profile of women’s football in Nigeria, with both teams displaying resilience, tactical discipline and determination throughout the encounter.
The keenly contested final ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time, with the Lafia-based side showing remarkable resilience by coming from behind to restore parity in the second half before prevailing in the ensuing penalty shootout to lift the coveted trophy.
The victory marks Nasarawa Amazons‘ third Women’s President Federation Cup title and serves as sweet redemption for the club, which suffered heartbreak after losing in last year’s final.
Speaking after the historic triumph, captain Confidence Nwoha attributed the team’s success to determination, unity and the psychological support provided by the coaching crew.
Expressing delight over the victory, Nwoha said the players remained focused on achieving success following their disappointment in the previous edition.
“We thank God for the coach that we have. She is always there to encourage us psychologically. Last year, we lost in the final, and we were determined that this year would be our year,” she stated.
She noted that the team’s unwavering resolve and mental strength played a significant role in their comeback and eventual triumph, adding that the players never lost belief despite falling behind during the encounter.
On the other hand, Heartland Queens captain Chimebere Opara accepted defeat in good faith, describing the officiating as fair while expressing sadness over her side’s inability to secure the title.
Although disappointed with the outcome, Opara remained optimistic about the future of the Imo State-based club and called for sustained support from the state government.
“I am not happy that we lost, but I know better days lie ahead. I appeal to the Imo State Government to continue to support us and believe in us. Next year, we will do better,” she said.
