The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has rescued a six-month-old baby from a burning residential building at Olomi’s Compound in Ogbomoso, preventing what could have been a tragic incident.
The incident occurred at about 8:38 p.m. on Saturday following a distress call received by the Ogbomoso Zonal Command from a resident, Mr. Abiodun Mayowa.
Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found the ground floor of a private one-storey building comprising three rooms engulfed in flames.
The emergency responders swiftly contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to the upper floor of the building and neighbouring properties.
The agency confirmed that a six-month-old baby was rescued from the burning building. Preliminary investigation attributed the fire outbreak to an unattended gas leak.
Following the operation, the Officer-in-Charge conducted a fire safety sensitisation for the occupants and other residents, educating them on measures to prevent similar incidents.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser and Chairman on Fire Services Reform, Dr. Morrof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to observe basic fire safety precautions, particularly by ensuring the proper installation, regular inspection and maintenance of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and gas appliances.
He also urged homeowners, shop owners and organisations to install appropriate fire extinguishers in their buildings to enhance emergency preparedness.
Akinwande also appealed to members of the public to report fire emergencies promptly and provide accurate addresses to enable firefighters to respond swiftly and minimise damage to lives and property.
