Convener of the Yayi Progressives Movement, Mr. Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde, in this interview with AZEEZ OLORUNLOMERU speaks on the gains of the economic reforms by the administration of President Bola Tinubu as well as its efforts to curb insecurity in the country. He argues that the reforms introduced by the President are laying the foundation for Nigeria’s long-term recovery. He also speaks on the 2027 Ogun governorship race, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s senatorial ambition and why he believes Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) should succeed the governor.
You are regarded as a grassroots mobiliser. Lead us to your sojourn in politics?
I am Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde from the family of the late Fowodara of Araromi, Iperu-Remo, Ogun State. I attended Wesley Primary School, Iperu, from 1988 to 1992 before proceeding to Christ Apostolic Grammar School, Iperu-Remo, where I completed my secondary education in 1998.
I later gained admission to the then University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB), now the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), where I obtained a bachelor’s degree.I began my professional career in 2009 with Suru Group Limited, a Lagos-based real estate company serving as Executive Director, Special Projects. I also served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Aerofield Homes Limited.
Over the years, I have attended several real estate and project management courses, seminars and conferences in Nigeria, Europe and the United States. Most recently, I completed an executive real estate programme at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
I am a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Managers and Administrators of Nigeria, an Associate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management and a Certified Customer Relationship Manager. I have also received an honorary doctorate in Business Administration and Corporate Governance from the European-American University in collaboration with the Kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara and the Republic of Panama.
My passion has always been to provide affordable housing for Nigerians, while politics has given me another platform to serve my community through grassroots mobilisation and public engagement.
As Convener of the Yayi Progressives Movement and Chairman of Aerofield Homes Limited, how have you balanced business with politics?
Success comes from clarity of purpose. Real estate is my profession, while politics is my avenue for public service.I started both journeys early in life and by God’s grace both have grown significantly. Rather than conflicting, they complement each other. Business enables me to contribute to economic development, while politics provides an opportunity to contribute socially and politically. With discipline and proper planning, I have been able to manage both.
Why did you form the Yayi Progressives Movement?
The movement evolved through different stages. Ahead of the 2023 general election, it started as the Dapo Abiodun Continuity Agenda (DACA), established to support Governor Dapo Abiodun’s re-election.
As political consultations expanded, it transformed into the Omoluabi Movement, reflecting broader progressive ideals centred on inclusiveness and people-oriented leadership. Following strategic collaborations with other support groups, including artisan associations across Ogun State, it became the Yayi Progressives Movement.
The transformation reflects our determination to build a stronger grassroots political platform capable of mobilising people across Ogun State.
Nigeria is facing economic and security challenges. Do you believe President Bola Tinubu’s policies will ultimately deliver the desired results?
Every nation passes through difficult periods and Nigeria is no exception. The current economic and security challenges are real, but I believe they are temporary. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working to address insecurity, strengthen the economy and reposition the country for sustainable growth.
The reforms may be difficult in the short term, but I believe they are necessary to rebuild the economy. While Nigerians are understandably concerned about the hardship, meaningful reforms often require time before their benefits become evident. My appeal is for Nigerians to remain hopeful and united. I believe the sacrifices being made today will ultimately produce positive outcomes.
What distinguishes the Yayi Progressives Movement from other political groups in Ogun State?
The Yayi Progressives Movement has grown into one of the state’s largest grassroots political organisations, with members across the 20 local councils. Our strength lies in our inclusiveness. We bring together youths, women, artisans, students, professionals, community leaders and party loyalists. Beyond politics, we focus on mentorship, leadership development and encouraging greater civic participation, especially among young people. We remain committed to supporting the APC and promoting democratic participation across Ogun State.
Governor Dapo Abiodun is expected to contest the Ogun East Senatorial seat after completing his tenure. How do you rate his chances?
I believe Governor Abiodun has strong prospects. His record in infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic development provides a basis for seeking another elective office. If elected to the Senate, I believe he would continue to represent Ogun State’s interests at the national level while building on the achievements of his administration.
The opposition has criticised Senator Adeola’s emergence as the APC’s preferred governorship aspirant. What is your response?
Every political party is entitled to its position. Our focus is on presenting what we believe is the best candidate to the people of Ogun State.Yewa has never produced a governor since the creation of the state, and many believe 2027 presents an opportunity to promote equity and inclusiveness.
Senator Adeola has demonstrated competence through his legislative career and commitment to public service. I believe he has the experience and leadership qualities required to govern the state.
Why do you believe Senator Adeola is the right person to succeed Governor Abiodun in 2027?
Senator Adeola combines legislative experience, administrative capacity and grassroots support.
Throughout his years in public office, he has built a reputation for effective representation, infrastructure
development and prudent management of public resources. His vision for Ogun State centres on economic growth, industrial development, improved infrastructure, education, healthcare and youth empowerment.
He also has the ability to unite different interests within the APC while maintaining strong relationships across the state. I believe he possesses the experience and vision required to lead Ogun State.
What message do you have for the people of Ogun State towards galvanising support for Yayi?
Our commitment as members of the APC is to continue mobilising support for good governance and democratic development. The Yayi Progressives Movement will continue to deepen grassroots engagement, encourage greater political participation and support policies that promote sustainable development.
I urge the people of Ogun State to remain peaceful, united and committed to the continued progress of the state.
