The decision by the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN) to honour the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Architect Sonny Echono, at its maiden national summit represents more than an addition to the growing list of accolades earned by the education administrator. It symbolises a convergence of policy, media scrutiny, stakeholders engagement and public recognition at a critical period in the history of Nigeria’s education sector.
For a body that has spent nearly three decades reporting, interrogating and documenting developments in education, ECAN’s first-ever summit marked a historic moment. The event brought together some of the most influential actors in the sector, including Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa; Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad; Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba; representatives of the Presidency and Kaduna State government.
Hence, Echono’s recognition was not merely ceremonial but journalists’ assessment, having closely monitored policies, interventions and sectoral reforms over the years.
The significance of ECAN’s honour lies in the identity of the awardee. Education correspondents occupy a unique position within Nigeria’s media landscape by engaging daily with policymakers, institutions, students, unions, development partners and education agencies.
As such, the recognition conveys a degree of credibility. Also, coming during ECAN’s maiden summit further elevates its importance. For almost 30 years, the association has served as a specialised platform for journalists covering activities in the education sector. Yet, it had never convened a summit of this scale bringing together ministers, chief executives of education agencies, development partners and other stakeholders under one roof. Therefore, the honour represented a public acknowledgement of TETFund as one of the most visible intervention agencies in the education landscape.
ECAN Chairman, Chuks Ukwuatu, said the association considered Echono deserving of the award because of the remarkable impact of the Fund’s interventions on tertiary education under his leadership.
Ukwuatu further applauded Echono for deploying TETFund’s resources strategically to address long-standing challenges, going beyond construction of physical structures to investments in research, digital learning, innovation hubs, entrepreneurship development and academic publishing, initiatives that have strengthened tertiary institutions and positioned them to contribute more effectively to nation building.
Since assuming office in March 2022, Echono has overseen an aggressive intervention in tertiary education. The Fund under him has continued to provide critical infrastructure, research support, academic staff development and innovation-driven programmes that are transforming tertiary education. One of the defining features of his tenure has been the push to reposition the country’s tertiary institutions as centres of research and innovation rather than mere teaching institutions. The strengthening of the National Research Fund, support for innovation hubs, expansion of the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) and investments in academic publishing have become recurring themes of TETFund’s intervention strategy.
Through partnerships with various organisations, it has promoted technology-driven solutions, entrepreneurship and research commercialisation. It has also intensified efforts to improve academic content through its book development intervention, leading to the publication and distribution of hundreds of Nigerian-authored textbooks aimed at reducing dependence on foreign materials.
Equally important is the emphasis on accountability and project monitoring. TETFund under Echono has repeatedly highlighted prudent utilisation of intervention funds, timely project delivery and stricter monitoring mechanisms as central pillars of its operations, positioning the agency as one of the most visible government institutions within the education sector.
Beyond media recognitions, Echono’s public service career earned national acknowledgement when he was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), one of Nigeria’s prestigious national awards. He has also received several commendations from professional bodies, educational institutions and civil society organisations for his contributions to educational development, public administration and institutional reform.
Also, the award was conferred in a summit focused on discussing the future of education in Nigeria. Unlike many award ceremonies organised primarily for celebration, ECAN’s summit was designed as a policy engagement platform.
The award equally underscores an often-overlooked reality – that journalists are stakeholders in educational development. Through investigative reporting, policy analysis, feature writing and news coverage, education correspondents help shape public understanding of the sector while highlighting successes, exposing shortcomings and creating platforms for accountability.
The ECAN summit demonstrated that media professionals are increasingly convening conversations, facilitating stakeholders’ engagement and contributing to policy discourse.
The significance of the ECAN award lies not only in what it says about Sonny Echono, but also in what it says about the education sector. It reflects a growing expectation that public institutions must demonstrate measurable impact before receiving recognition.
For Echono, the honour adds another chapter to a career associated with institutional reforms and for ECAN, the maiden summit signalled the emergence of a new platform, where policymakers, administrators, development partners and journalists can collectively examine the state of the education sector.
It is a reminder that impactful leadership, sustained reforms and visible results will continue to attract recognition from those who observe the sector most closely.
As Nigeria seeks to transform its education system to meet the demands of the 21st century, the ECAN summit and the recognition of figures such as Echono underscore the importance of collaboration among government, institutions, development partners and the media. In that sense, the award is not simply a celebration of one individual; it is also an affirmation of the critical role that purposeful leadership and accountability play in driving educational progress.
