The Executive Director of the Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED), Dr. Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi has said that because lamentation would not bring solution to the high rate of maternal mortality in Kano, the state government needs to urgently come up with a legislative action to curb the trend.

He said this while delivering the keynote address at a legislative retreat for stakeholders in Kano recently on Free Maternal Health Bill about to be sent to the state House of Assembly. Zikirullahi noted that a recent Maternal Mortality Ratios (MMR) from various studies show that the figures for Kano State are way higher than the averages at the national and geo-political zonal levels.

“We cannot run away from the fact that the challenge of maternal mortality represents one of our most difficult development and governance issues. As Nigeria’s most populous state, Kano would definitely come up as a state of interest when the fact of Nigeria’s unenviable status as one of the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, is raised.
