Nigeria’s junior tennis sensation, Mofifunoluwa Atilola, has climbed to sixth in the African girls’ Under-14 rankings following an impressive title-winning campaign at the ITF/Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Under-14 circuit in Algeria.

 

The 12-year-old secured three trophies during the two-week tournament, further cementing her status as one of Africa’s most promising young tennis players.

 

Atilola delivered a series of standout performances throughout the competition, combining precise baseline play, tactical awareness and remarkable endurance to overcome some of the continent’s leading junior players.

 

In one of her key matches, the Nigerian defeated Algeria’s Maya Bey 7-5, 6-2 to book a place in the final against Cameroon’s Olive Ngimbis.

 

She maintained her impressive form in the championship match, defeating Ngimbis to claim the girls’ singles title. The victory capped a dominant outing in North Africa, where she emerged as one of the most successful players of the tournament.

 

Her performance was characterised by composure under pressure, tactical discipline and the ability to adapt effectively during difficult exchanges.

 

Records from the Confederation of African Tennis also confirmed Atilola as the girls’ singles champion of one of the Algeria tournament legs, highlighting Nigeria’s strong showing at the event.

 

The latest achievement marks another milestone in the youngster’s rapid rise on the continental tennis circuit. Atilola only began competing regularly in African junior tournaments about a year ago but has since made significant progress through the rankings with a string of strong performances in competitions sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation and CAT.

 

Earlier this year, she rose to the top of the West African Under-14 rankings after another successful outing in Algeria. That performance briefly elevated her to fourth place in Africa, underscoring the speed of her development and growing reputation on the continent.

 

Her current position as Africa’s sixth-ranked Under-14 girl reflects a sustained run of strong results rather than a single tournament success. Prior to the latest event, she was ranked seventh on the continent, with her title-winning performance in Algeria earning her another upward movement.

 

Atilola, who turns 13 in October, has already established herself as a dominant force in junior tennis in Nigeria, winning titles across multiple age categories. By early 2025, she had reportedly amassed more than 30 junior trophies while competing in the Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 divisions.

 

Her latest success in Algeria adds to an increasingly impressive record and reinforces her standing as one of Nigeria’s brightest young sporting prospects.

 

With continued international exposure and a growing list of achievements, Atilola is widely regarded as a player with the potential to become a major force in African tennis in the years ahead.
