The Delta State chapter of the Working People United (WOPU) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori for the 2027 general elections, pledging to mobilise workers and residents across the state to vote for both leaders.

The endorsement was announced during the inauguration of the Delta State chapter of the organisation in Asaba, where labour leaders and members of the group declared their support for the President and the governor, citing what they described as bold economic reforms and good governance.

Speaking at the event, former President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and National Trustee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Prince Williams Akporeha, said WOPU had adopted President Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election because of his willingness to implement difficult but necessary reforms aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s economy.

Akporeha acknowledged that the removal of fuel subsidy had imposed hardship on Nigerians but argued that the decision was unavoidable to restore fiscal stability.

According to him, although he initially opposed the policy as a labour leader, discussions with the President convinced him that the government inherited severe financial challenges, including an empty treasury and unsustainable borrowing to meet salary obligations.

He also commended Tinubu for approving a new national minimum wage and reducing the review cycle for workers’ salaries from five years to three years, describing the measures as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.

On Delta State, Akporeha praised Governor Oborevwori for what he described as quality leadership and a commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy, insisting that the governor deserved the continued support of workers throughout the state.

He explained that WOPU was established as a civic and political movement to encourage greater participation of working people in governance while promoting policies that improve the welfare of Nigerians.

According to him, the organisation represents workers in both the formal and informal sectors and is committed to influencing public policy while supporting leaders it considers capable of delivering good governance.

“We are here for two reasons: to advocate good policies and to support good politics. Working people should not only demand accountability but also identify and support leaders who can deliver good governance,” Akporeha said.

He further disclosed that former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, had been invested as the patron of the organisation, while stressing that WOPU was not sponsored by any politician or political office holder.

Emphasising the group’s independence, Akporeha maintained that the movement was driven by the conviction that working people should not only criticise government policies but also support leaders whose actions promote national development and improve citizens’ welfare.

In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated Delta State Coordinator of WOPU, Comrade Ogberejitinor Obatarhe, pledged to lead the organisation in accordance with its constitution and intensify public enlightenment on government policies.

Obatarhe said many residents lacked adequate information about government programmes and promised to leverage social media and other communication platforms to educate the public on governance and the organisation’s objectives.

He also vowed to expand WOPU’s membership across Delta State and assured the national leadership that the state chapter would effectively mobilise workers and other residents in support of the organisation’s mandate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
