The National Population Commission, NPC, on Thursday, announced the commencement of the National Digital Birth and Death Registration System in Taraba state, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, CRVS, programme.
The Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission representing Taraba state, Saany Sule Sale, made the announcement during a press conference in Jalingo.
Sale said the nationwide digital transformation initiative officially took effect on July 1, 2026, describing it as a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s birth and death registration system.
According to him, the initiative is designed to strengthen civil registration, improve the generation of vital statistics, and ensure that every birth and death is captured through a modern, efficient, and digitally enabled registration platform.
He noted that the rollout of the new digital registration system represents another critical step in the commission’s efforts to establish a registration framework that meets international standards while supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Federal Commissioner explained that the introduction of the digital platform has officially brought an end to the manual birth and death registration process previously in use.
“Henceforth, only digital certificates issued through the VITALREG platform will be recognised as valid,” he stated.
The event featured goodwill messages from the Chairman of Jalingo local government council, Nura Dantsoho; the Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Nuhu Tukura Nyigwa; and representatives of the Identity Card Management Office.
