Group commends Tinubu, Ribadu over rescue of abducted Oyo pupils

Nuhu Ribadu with President Nola Tinubu

The Citizens’ Safety & Security Network (CSSN) has commended President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, security agencies and the judiciary over the rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted from Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Timothy Danladi Usman, the organisation described the rescue operation as the outcome of sustained intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration and political support from the Federal Government.

The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esiele communities of Orire Local Government Area.

According to the group, the attacks resulted in the abduction of dozens of pupils, teachers and a school principal. It added that one teacher was killed during the attack while another later died in captivity.

The organisation noted that the incident prompted nationwide condemnation, including protests by teachers and calls for improved security around schools.

CSSN particularly praised the National Security Adviser, saying his office coordinated intelligence efforts that contributed to the eventual rescue of the victims.

The group also acknowledged what it described as the role played by the various security agencies through intelligence sharing and joint operations.

In addition, CSSN welcomed the prosecution of three suspects identified as Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, also known as Yunusa bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar, in connection with the incident.

The organisation also commended the judiciary over the conviction and life sentences imposed on the three for concealing information relating to the alleged masterminds of the abduction.

“This decisive judicial action sends a clear signal that those who enable or shield the perpetrators of such heinous crimes will face the full weight of the law.”

While welcoming the rescue operation and subsequent convictions, the group urged security agencies to strengthen measures aimed at protecting schools, improve intelligence gathering in vulnerable communities and sustain efforts to prevent future attacks.

It also called for continued vigilance to safeguard pupils, teachers and educational institutions across the country.
