The Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has challenged ministry and organisational leaders to radically restructure their approach to succession and governance.

Addressing a deep-rooted cultural crisis in which African institutions frequently collapse alongside their founders, Adeyemi said:

“Healthy churches run on principles, not personalities. We need to build systems that will outlive founders. Too many churches have died with the founders. Many have even died before the founders.”

Adeyemi delivered this charge during the inaugural Global Church Systems Conference (GCSC), which attracted over 1,000 clergymen and women.

He noted that Africa’s prevailing monarchical leadership culture, in which leaders operate unquestioned and institutions are closely tied to individuals, has crippled trans-generational impact across both the religious and corporate sectors.

“Don’t build an empire. Build God’s kingdom,” Adeyemi warned attendees.

“The real measurement of your success will be after you have gone. So design systems. Not things that will make you a hero.”

Adeyemi linked the church’s organisational health directly to national development and socioeconomic resilience. Noting the collapse of public systems, highlighted by millions of out-of school children and rising insecurity, he argued that properly structured churches must step in to fill the void.

“A country, first of all, decides its vision. Then, it builds the people that will build the country in the vision,” Adeyemi explained.

Pointing to the historical role of missionary societies in establishing Nigeria’s educational foundation, he issued a mandate: “Church, being the light of the world, always paved the way when it came to education. The church cannot sit down now and wait for the government.”

The conference featured respected voices from across the Christian leadership community, including the Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), and Founder of Global Impact Church, Pastor Yemi Davids; Lead Pastor of The Elevation Church, Pastor Godman Akinlabi; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FifthGear Plus Consulting, Pastor Niyi Adesanya; Pastor Seyi Oladimeji of Church Management Consult; and members of Daystar Christian Centre’s Strategy Support Team.
