As Nigeria continues its efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS as a public health threat, one indigenous organization has increasingly distinguished itself as a national leader in HIV prevention, treatment, laboratory strengthening, and health systems development. The Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNi) has earned widespread recognition for implementing some of the country’s largest donor-funded public health programs while partnering closely with the Federal Government of Nigeria, state governments, the United States Government, and leading international health organizations.

Established in 2009, AHNi has evolved into one of Nigeria’s foremost indigenous public health organizations, delivering technical assistance across HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, laboratory systems strengthening, disease surveillance, maternal and child health, humanitarian response, and health information systems. Through evidence-based interventions and strategic partnerships, the organization has contributed significantly to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system and advancing progress toward HIV epidemic control.

AHNi’s growing reputation has attracted the confidence of major international development partners. Working under the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), AHNi has implemented large-scale public health programs designed to expand HIV testing, increase treatment coverage, strengthen laboratory services, improve viral-load monitoring, and support sustainable government ownership of HIV programs throughout Nigeria.

One of AHNi’s landmark achievements came with the launch of the Accelerating Control of the HIV Epidemic in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (ACEBAY) project, a five-year, US$53 million USAID-funded initiative aimed at accelerating HIV epidemic control in northeastern Nigeria.

The project was officially launched in August 2022 during a high-profile ceremony attended by U.S. Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, the Governors of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe States, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Health, State Agencies for the Control of HIV/AIDS, development partners, and representatives of the international donor community.

Unlike many donor-funded programs in which international organizations serve as prime implementers, AHNi was selected as the prime recipient responsible for leading project implementation while coordinating a consortium of respected national and international organizations, including FHI 360, the American University of Nigeria, the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), and the Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN).

The selection of AHNi to lead such a significant USAID investment reflects the organization’s technical expertise, operational capacity, financial accountability, and long-standing record of successfully managing complex public health interventions across Nigeria.

Under the ACEBAY project, AHNi is working with state governments to accelerate progress toward the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, expand access to HIV prevention and treatment services, strengthen laboratory systems, improve healthcare quality, eliminate discrimination against people living with HIV, and build more resilient healthcare systems capable of sustaining epidemic control.

AHNi’s impact extends well beyond government partnerships. Independent organizations have also highlighted the organization’s contribution to improving HIV outcomes and strengthening communities.

In its feature titled “Fighting HIV/AIDS in Nigeria: Healthy Economic Future for Women,” The Borgen Project, an international nonprofit organization focused on global poverty and development, identified AHNi as one of the principal organizations supporting Nigeria’s HIV response through PEPFAR.

The publication reported that:

“Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNi) is one of several NGOs involved in PEPFAR’s work. Founded in 2009, the organization implements public health interventions focused on education and youth development. It also works on disease prevention and epidemic control.”

The report further noted that AHNi led the National Aligned HIV/AIDS Initiative (NAHI) in collaboration with the Nigerian Government and PEPFAR to support Nigeria’s efforts toward achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 epidemic-control targets by 2030.

According to The Borgen Project, initiatives implemented by organizations such as AHNi have expanded access to HIV prevention, treatment, leadership development, gender equality programs, and economic empowerment opportunities for women living with HIV while contributing to broader improvements in public health and national economic development.

AHNi’s distinguished reputation is further reinforced through its strategic partnership with FHI 360, one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations in global health and development. FHI 360 has publicly recognized AHNi as one of its principal indigenous implementation partners responsible for providing state-level technical leadership, laboratory systems strengthening, operational support, and capacity building under major USAID- and PEPFAR-funded HIV programs in Nigeria.

Collectively, these accomplishments demonstrate that AHNi has become far more than a local nonprofit organization. Through sustained collaboration with the Government of Nigeria, USAID, PEPFAR, FHI 360, and numerous international partners, AHNi has established itself as one of Nigeria’s most respected indigenous public health institutions, making measurable contributions to HIV epidemic control, laboratory strengthening, health systems development, and sustainable healthcare delivery across the country.
