Drawing from the founder’s personal experience of loss, the Katalog Charity Foundation is using philanthropy to bridge gaps in healthcare, welfare and economic empowerment for vulnerable Nigerians, offering hope and practical support to widows, widowers and young people.

A commitment to restoring hope and dignity to vulnerable Nigerians took centre stage in Lagos as the Katalog Charity Foundation provided free medical care, food supplies and financial assistance to widows, widowers and young adults through its Katalog Hope Initiative.

The philanthropic outreach, held at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Lekki Phase 1, brought together healthcare professionals, volunteers and community members to deliver essential medical services and welfare support to beneficiaries, reinforcing the foundation’s mission of extending compassion to people often overlooked by existing social support systems.

As part of the intervention, beneficiaries underwent comprehensive health screenings for malaria, typhoid, tuberculosis, blood sugar and blood pressure, followed by medical consultations and counselling on managing diagnosed conditions. They also received cooked meals, food items and cash support to help ease immediate financial pressures.

Founder of the Katalog Charity Foundation, Dr. Vivian Akaenyi, said the initiative reflects her conviction that philanthropy should provide practical solutions to the everyday challenges faced by vulnerable people, particularly widows.

According to her, the foundation was inspired by the death of her father in 2022 after a brief illness, an experience that transformed her understanding of the emotional and financial realities of widowhood.

“My mum became a widow suddenly. My father died within three days of ailment in my arms. And then I realised that nobody cares about people like this,” she said.

Although she had been supporting vulnerable people through informal charitable activities since 2015, Akaenyi explained that the experience motivated her to establish the Katalog Charity Foundation as a structured platform dedicated to sustaining humanitarian interventions in memory of her late father.

She observed that many widows are often left to navigate life without adequate support from either government institutions or society.

“They’re not remembered by the government. They’re not remembered by society. It’s good to have someone to reach out to them, and that’s what made a breakthrough for this,” she said.

For Akaenyi, philanthropy is driven not by obligation but by purpose.

“There is no hard part to it. If you help the poor, you should be happy doing so,” she said, adding that seeing relief and renewed hope on beneficiaries’ faces was the greatest gift she could receive, especially as the outreach coincided with her birthday.

Looking ahead, the foundation plans to deepen its impact through an expanded empowerment programme scheduled for October. The initiative will provide 100 widows with vocational equipment and income-generating tools alongside financial support, enabling them to build sustainable livelihoods beyond one-time assistance.

Beneficiaries commended the quality of the medical outreach, describing the exercise as organised, efficient and professionally managed. Many noted that the health personnel were attentive throughout the screening and consultation process, while the welfare packages offered much-needed relief.

The outreach also attracted support from members of the church community and other partners, with Akaenyi’s mother receiving special recognition for her encouragement and contribution to the foundation’s humanitarian work.

She urged beneficiaries to extend acts of kindness to others whenever they are able, stressing that philanthropy becomes more impactful when compassion is shared across communities.

Beyond providing temporary relief, the Katalog Hope Initiative reflects a growing model of strategic philanthropy that combines healthcare, social welfare and economic empowerment to strengthen vulnerable households. By transforming personal grief into sustained community service, the Katalog Charity Foundation continues to demonstrate how charitable giving can create lasting social impact for widows, widowers and other underserved groups in Nigeria.
