…as Olusosun upgrade improves operations

Lagos residents may soon begin to see cleaner streets and faster waste collection following a major improvement in operations at the Olusosun Disposal Facility, where the rehabilitation of its access road has significantly increased the pace of refuse evacuation.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says it evacuated more than 18,660 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste across its disposal facilities within one week, recording a sharp increase in operational efficiency after upgrading the Olusosun landfill.

Speaking during an operations review meeting at the Authority’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa yesterday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency recorded 1,866 truck trips between July 28 and August 3, 2026, describing the achievement as evidence that investment in critical infrastructure was yielding tangible results.

According to him, the Olusosun Disposal Facility alone handled 1,012 truck trips during the period, up from 574 truck trips recorded in the previous week. The increase of 438 truck trips represents a 76 per cent rise in the facility’s operational capacity.

Gbadegesin attributed the improvement to the rehabilitation of the access road leading to the landfill and the creation of additional waste disposal platforms, which have reduced truck waiting time, improved turnaround and enhanced the state’s overall waste evacuation capacity.

He said the intervention had also eliminated operational bottlenecks that previously slowed waste disposal, especially during the peak of the rainy season, while reflecting the Lagos State Government’s continued investment in strengthening waste management infrastructure.

The agency recorded its highest daily performance on August 1, when 349 truck trips evacuated an estimated 3,490 metric tonnes of waste across the state’s disposal facilities.

Gbadegesin noted that the Ewu-Elepe, Badagry and Oke-Osho disposal facilities, as well as the Waste-to-Wealth Material Recovery Facility (WAE MRF) in Igando, continued to complement operations at Olusosun, ensuring efficient waste evacuation across different parts of Lagos.

“The steady improvement in our operational figures confirms that investment in critical infrastructure produces measurable results. We are witnessing faster truck turnaround, improved access to disposal facilities and increased waste evacuation capacity, all of which are translating into better service delivery for Lagos residents,” he said.

The LAWMA boss added that the Authority would sustain the momentum through the construction of modern transfer loading stations, expansion of waste recovery infrastructure, development of waste-to-energy projects and the acquisition of additional compactor trucks.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s transition from a landfill-dependent waste management system to an integrated and sustainable model driven by recycling, resource recovery, circular economy principles and modern waste processing infrastructure.
