The Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, in partnership with the Faculty of Ophthalmology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has commissioned the Gbemisola Olowolafe Centre for Ophthalmic Simulation (GOCOS)

The facility located at at the Guinness Eye Centre, Idi-Araba, Lagos.is the first ophthalmic surgical simulation centre in West Africa equipped with the globally recognised EyeSi Surgical Simulator, a technology designed to enhance the training of resident ophthalmologists through realistic, risk-free surgical simulation.

According to the partners, the centre will provide resident doctors with an opportunity to develop and refine their surgical skills before operating on patients, with the aim of improving surgical precision, patient safety and overall eye care outcomes.

Speaking at the commissioning, Chairman of the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, Tunji Olowolafe, said the project reflects the foundation’s commitment to advancing medical education and specialist healthcare in Nigeria.

He explained that naming the centre after his late wife, Gbemisola Olowolafe, was intended to preserve her legacy while supporting the training of future generations of ophthalmologists.

Olowolafe also commended the leadership of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, LUTH, LASUTH and the Faculty of Ophthalmology for collaborating on the initiative, describing the project as a demonstration of the impact of partnerships between philanthropic organisations and public health institutions.

Stakeholders at the event described the commissioning of GOCOS as a milestone for ophthalmic education in Nigeria, noting that the facility is expected to strengthen specialist training and contribute to improved healthcare delivery across the country and the West African sub-region.
