President Bola Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s formal admission as the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC), describing the development as a landmark achievement that reflects growing international confidence in the country’s energy reforms and leadership on the African continent.

The President said Nigeria’s membership of the century-old global energy body, which brings together more than 100 countries, would enable the nation to play a more prominent role in shaping international discussions on energy security, equity and sustainability.

Tinubu also congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, led by Chairman, Mr. Abdulrazaq Isa, OFR, and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bala Wunti, as well as members of the pioneer board drawn from across the energy value chain, regulatory agencies, industry associations, finance, academia and the Future Energy Leaders community.

According to a statement signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Friday, the President described Isa as a distinguished patriot and visionary industrialist whose pioneering investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have expanded opportunities for Nigerian enterprise and strengthened the country’s energy landscape.

He equally praised Wunti as one of Nigeria’s foremost energy strategists and reform advocates, noting that his more than three decades of service have been defined by integrity, strategic leadership and landmark reforms that boosted national revenues and enhanced investor confidence in the energy sector.

According to the President, the composition of the inaugural board, comprising experienced industry leaders, regulators, financial experts and young professionals, provides the credibility, neutrality and expertise required to position WEC Nigeria for success.

“Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate, to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions,” Tinubu said.

The President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting WEC Nigeria as a neutral, technology-agnostic platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation and innovation.

He also reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the World Energy Council headquarters in London and its global network to advance secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all.

Tinubu wished Isa, Wunti and members of the inaugural board success as they undertake what he described as a historic national assignment.
