An eight-room residential building was on Saturday night gutted by fire at No. 37 Ifesowapo, Atilapa, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident occurred at about 10:53 p.m. on Saturday, following a distress call received by the Oyo State Fire Services Agency.

According to the agency, firefighters led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Amoo promptly responded to the scene and found the building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected property.

The fire crew immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully prevented the inferno from spreading to neighbouring buildings and properties.

No casualty was recorded in the incident.

Preliminary investigations by the agency indicated that the fire was caused by an unattended cooking gas, which ignited nearby combustible materials and subsequently set the building ablaze.

The agency also conducted a brief fire safety awareness session for residents and members of the public at the scene, urging them to contact the fire service promptly whenever a fire emergency occurs.

The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at about 6:54 a.m. on Sunday and was placed on operational standby for further emergency response.

The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to remain vigilant and observe fire safety precautions.

Akinwande also stressed the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in homes to enable occupants to tackle fires at an early stage before they escalate.

The agency urged members of the public to report fire incidents promptly and provide accurate addresses to facilitate swift response.
