Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian authorities to uphold human rights ahead of the Osun State gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, 15 August, 2026 amid reports of violence and intimidation.

Amnesty International made this call on Tuesday via a post it shared on its official X account, saying that it has been receiving disturbing reports of violence, arrests of government officials and allegations of plans to influence the Osun State Governorship election.

It has urged the Nigerian authorities to fulfil their obligation to promote, protect, respect, and fulfil human rights amidst disturbing signs of violence, intimidation and allegations of interference.

The statement highlighted at least 29 people killed in 73 incidents across areas in Osun State including Osogbo, Ede, Ife, and Ikire, plus arrests of officials and alleged election interference by political supporters.

Amnesty has this urged security agencies to remain neutral, investigate all incidents, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure voters can participate freely without fear.

“Authorities must ensure accountability for these reprehensible acts. All parties must commit to renounce violence and commit to a free and fair election,” Amnesty wrote.

“Investigation by our team on the ground shows escalating violence and build up for more clashes in: Osogbo, Ede, Ife, Oriade, Ijebu-Ijesha, Ilobu, and Ikire.

“Fueling the instability and impunity in the state, are reports of supporters of some politicians violently targeting political opponents, real or perceived.”

Amnesty has therefore called on the authorities to stamp out any potential impunity by ensuring these incidents are investigated and those suspected to be responsible, brought to justice.

It said the potential turmoil being stirred up by various groups ahead of the gubernatorial election in Osun State should send a clear signal to the Nigerian authorities of the imminent violence ahead of the election and government must take active steps to prevent bloody poll.

According to Amnesty, the authorities at all levels and security agencies must stand neutral and not engage in any act that may or can be perceived to favour any political party or candidate.

“The right of the people of Osun state to vote freely and fairly in an atmosphere of respect for human rights must be upheld,” the statement added.
