Osun CP Election warns against forceful takeover of LGs

The Commissioner of Police deployed for Osun State governorship election, CP Samuel Etaifo

As security agencies continue to sustain peace in Osun after Saturday’s governorship poll, the Commissioner of Police (Election), Commissioner of Police (Election), Samuel Etaifo, on Monday cautioned against plot by anybody to forcefully take over control of local government secretariats in the state.

He said no individual or group should engage in any act capable of threatening the peace and tranquility of the state.

This warning was contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi.

While congratulating the people of Osun on the successful and peaceful conclusion of the recent governorship poll, Etaifo lauded all stakeholders for their participation in the democratic process.

The statement, however, noted with concern reports of plans by some individuals or groups to forcefully take over the affairs and premises of local government areas in the state, notwithstanding that the matter remains before the court.

“The Police Command wishes to state clearly that no individual, political group, or association has the right to resort to self-help or the use of force to assume control of any Local Government Area or public institution while judicial proceedings are ongoing.

“All parties are urged to exercise patience and allow the courts to determine the matter in accordance with the law. Any attempt to forcibly occupy or disrupt local government facilities will be viewed as a serious breach of the peace and dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, including arrest and prosecution of persons found culpable.

“Parents, community and traditional leaders, political and youth leaders, and other stakeholders are enjoined to counsel their supporters against acts capable of undermining the peace and security of the state.”

It is recalled that there had been protracted leadership crisis between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling Accord over the legitimate chairmen for local governments in Osun, resulting in prolonged litigations and conflicting judgments.
