Former President of Liberia, George Manneh Weah, will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Annual General Conference (AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, Rivers State between August 21st and 28th.
The NBA, in announcing Weah as the keynote speaker, said his participation was expected to deepen the quality of discourse at the conference and stimulate robust conversations around this year’s theme, “Beyond Limits.”
Weah, a former world footballer and pan-African statesman, served as President of Liberia from 2018 to 2024.
According to the chairman of the AGC Planning Committee, Abdul Muhammed (SAN), Weah’s emergence as the conference keynote speaker brings together two defining strands of his public life – sport and governance, which have made him an influential figure across Africa and beyond.
As President of Liberia, Weah was noted for several initiatives in infrastructure, education and public-sector reform.
Among his early actions in office was a 25 per cent reduction in his salary and other benefits, which he said was necessary to demonstrate leadership and solidarity with Liberians.
His administration also pursued policies aimed at expanding access to education, including the introduction of tuition-free education at public universities, while investments in infrastructure formed part of his administration’s development agenda.
However, it was his conduct following Liberia’s 2023 presidential election that further enhanced his reputation as a statesman.
After narrowly losing the presidential runoff to Joseph Boakai, who secured 50.64 per cent of the votes against Weah’s 49.36 per cent, Weah conceded defeat and relinquished power in 2024 without mounting a prolonged challenge to the result.
His acceptance of the outcome and peaceful transfer of power was widely regarded as a demonstration of democratic maturity and respect for constitutional governance, particularly given the razor-thin margin separating the two candidates.
Before entering partisan politics, Weah had already established himself as an international humanitarian and advocate for children affected by conflict, poverty and disease.
He became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1997 and, in 2004, received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award from ESPN in recognition of his humanitarian work.
But it was on the football pitch that Weah first attained global prominence.
In 1995, he became the first and remains the only African footballer to have won the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year and African Footballer of the Year awards in
His historic achievement remains one of the most celebrated milestones in African football and has made him a symbol of possibility for generations of young Africans.
The NBA said Weah’s life story, spanning elite sport, humanitarian service and democratic governance, resonates strongly with the philosophy behind the conference theme, “Beyond Limits.”
According to the Association, Weah’s journey from footballing greatness to the highest political office in Liberia embodies “the spirit of aspiring Beyond Limits,” while his continued engagement with young people has positioned him as a symbol of hope, resilience and service.
The former Liberian president holds Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration and public administration from DeVry University, Miami, Florida, United States.
He has also received honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters from AME Zion University, Cuttington University and the University of Liberia in recognition of his contributions to sports, humanitarianism, peacebuilding, education and governance.
The NBA said the choice of Weah was particularly significant as Nigeria approaches another general election cycle and confronts major economic, political and institutional challenges.
“With our country preparing for its General Elections next year at a pivotal moment in our nation’s economic and political evolution, this year’s conference presents a platform for a critical evaluation of our choices as Africa’s largest Bar,” the chairman of the AGC Planning Committee, Muhammed, said.
