President Bola Tinubu has presented his administration’s economic reform programme as a necessary but difficult intervention, saying the measures implemented since 2023 were designed to build a stronger economy and prevent even greater economic damage.
The President, in a message to Nigerians ahead of the presentation of the government’s Reforms Scorecard, said the document would provide an account of what the reforms had achieved, their costs and the greater economic harms the government believed had been avoided by taking decisive action.
Tinubu said when his administration embarked on the reform journey in 2023, he had promised that the difficult decisions would ultimately produce an economy that worked better for Nigerians and a stronger country for future generations.
“Today, your government presents The Reforms Scorecard,” the President said, adding that the document would set out “what our reforms have achieved, what they have cost us, and the greater costs and harms we have prevented by acting when we did.”
He said he had directed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, to account to Nigerians on the reforms, including the figures behind the government’s decisions, progress recorded and areas where more work remained.
According to Tinubu, Nigerians deserved a clear understanding of the economic changes introduced by the administration and their implications for households, businesses and the wider economy.
“You deserve to see the numbers. You deserve to know what has changed and what these reforms mean for you, your family, your business and our country,” he said.
The President stressed that the reforms were ultimately about accountability to the citizens, declaring: “This is your government. This is your country. This is our account to you.”
The Reforms Scorecard is expected to provide the administration’s assessment of the economic reforms undertaken since May 2023 and their impact on the country’s fiscal, monetary and broader economic landscape.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to follow the presentation of the scorecard as his administration seeks to explain the rationale, costs and outcomes of its reform agenda.
