Team Delta secured qualification in six team sports at the Enugu 2026 National Sports Festival South-South Zonal Elimination, just as Lagos emerged winners in the South-West contest.

Delta qualified in basketball (male and female), beach volleyball (female), cricket (male and female), and football (female).

The cricket event was the last concluded in the South-South zonal elimination held in Calabar, Cross River State.

Last week, Delta also topped the South-South zonal elimination with 14 team spots for the maiden National Intermediate Games holding in Lagos State next year.

The performance in the zonal elimination ahead of the Enugu 2026 National Sports Festival places Delta among the leading states at the South-South zonal exercise, with Rivers, which also secured six spots.

Edo secured four team qualifications, while Bayelsa recorded two and Cross River one.

Team Lagos showed its supremacy in sports in the South-West by edging out other competitors from the region, emerging top in the five team events competed at the elimination series.

The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by coming top of their group, it showed dominance in three other sports by clinching both the male and female tickets.

Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.

The Osun basketball team fell to the superior firepower of the Team Lagos male team in their last match by 41-68, while the female team came second behind Team Ogun in their last match.

The Lagos female football team defeated Oyo in the finals by a lone goal.

The cricket male and female teams finished in second position behind Oyo and Ekiti, respectively.

The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, who expressed happiness over the team’s performance, said it was the result of the state government’s investment in infrastructure and athlete development.

“This performance shows the quality of talent in Lagos and the impact of the work we are putting into athletes’ development. Our athletes have shown that Team Lagos is ready to compete at the highest level, and we will continue to give them the support they need to succeed,” Fatodu said.

“We appreciate Governor Sanwo-Olu for his strong commitment to sports. His investment in facilities, programmes, and athlete development is creating the platform for our athletes to compete, win, and inspire the next generation,” he added.

The South West elimination series featured teams from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti.
