The Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 Presidential Election, Peter Obi, was in attendance as Ikorodu City earned their first-ever win over reigning champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday evening.

The former Anambra State Governor, alongside the President of Ikorodu City, Sanmi Doherty, witnessed the “Oga Boys” beat Enugu Rangers for the first time after six consecutive losses against the Flying Antelopes in the league.

Ikorodu City came into the tie on the back of a three-game winless run, while the visitors were looking to extend their six-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

The hosts made their intention to seal three points known early enough as new Super Eagles invitee for the Under-23 team, Aderemi Adeoye, scored the opener in the sixth minute from a sublime free-kick. The 19-year-old midfielder powered the ball over the wall in what could be in the running for the Goal of the Season Award.
Ikorodu City took the lead into the break as Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men struggled to breach the defense of their host.

The tie went beyond the reach of the Rangers as Ikechukwu Junior doubled the lead after the hour mark. Junior showed no respect to his elders as he weaved his way past a couple of defenders before burying the ball into the bottom of the net to register his second goal of the season.

Ikorodu City’s victory takes them to 8th on the log with eight points after five matches, while Enugu Rangers drop to fourth with 10 points after five matches.

Elsewhere, Enyimba ended their run of five consecutive losses as the Aba Elephants earned their first point of the season away at Kano Pillars. The heavyweight clash ended goalless at the Sani Abacha Stadium as both sides couldn’t find a break after 90 minutes and added time.

Barau FC, the Kano-based side, remain on top of the league with 12 points after six matches and are one of the teams, alongside Kano Pillars, yet to lose a match so far in the Nigeria Premier Football League this season.
