Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.

In a video posted on X by his Spokesman/Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the VP arrived with his entourage and was welcomed by officials and members of the Nigerian Army.

Shettima left Abuja on September 20 to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual gathering, on the president’s instruction.
At the General Debate, he delivered the president’s national statement. In it, Nigeria repeated its call for reform of the UN Security Council and asked for permanent African representation. The statement also called for fairer global financing, stronger climate support and deeper multilateral cooperation.

The Vice President also took part in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group. There, a message from President Tinubu urged African countries to move beyond exporting raw minerals towards processing, manufacturing and value addition.
At a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima said Nigeria regards education as an investment in productivity, human capital and national prosperity. He also expressed support for the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign.

He also met Nigerians in the diaspora, telling them their investment, expertise and networks matter to national development.
His other engagements included meetings with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. According to the statement, the discussions covered development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, and peace and security. It adds that he restated President Tinubu’s call for a more representative and equitable global order.
