The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Quorra and the Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on information management, media relations and crisis communication within the maritime sector.

The partnership was discussed when the executive members of MARCON, led by its President, Ismail Aniemu, paid a courtesy visit to NNS Quorra in Apapa.

The Deputy Commandant, Captain Dantani Bukar, described the engagement as a welcome development, stressing the need for stronger information sharing between the Navy and the media.

Bukar said the command would identify areas where MARCON could contribute to the training of naval officers, particularly in media relations and publicity.

He described Quorra as one of Nigeria’s foremost professional maritime training institutions, noting that the school has continued to train officers to meet the demands of their assignments.

Bukar emphasised the importance of maintaining high training standards, stressing that effective training remains essential to producing competent personnel for deployment.

He added that the command would consider involving media and information professionals in relevant training programmes, seminars and lectures, while providing opportunities for MARCON members to contribute where their expertise is required.

Speaking earlier, MARCON President, Ismail Aniemu, said the Navy’s achievements in securing the nation’s waters could not be separated from the quality of training provided to its personnel.

Aniemu said the visit was aimed at deepening professional relations between maritime journalists and the Nigerian Navy, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and improved communication within the maritime sector.

He commended NNS Quorra for its role in developing human capacity for the Nigerian Navy, saying efficient
manpower is critical to the effectiveness of maritime security operations.

The MARCON President said the association is interested in building an inter-organisational relationship with NNS Quorra, particularly in media relations, information management and crisis communication.

He said information management and crisis management are the nexus, stressing that naval officers operating at both tactical and strategic levels need adequate knowledge of information management.

MARCON president proposed that the subjects be incorporated into relevant training modules at Quorra, with MARCON providing practitioners and contemporary industry knowledge.

According to him, the maritime sector is constantly evolving and that training institutions need to update their knowledge and approaches to reflect emerging challenges.

“The way problems of 10 years ago were solved, if we try to apply the same solution to a 2026 problem with a 2016 solution, we are likely to meet a brick wall because things are changing,” he said.

Aniemu said the association is prepared to share knowledge from both the classroom and contemporary field experience, adding that interaction between practitioners and naval trainees could enhance learning.

He said MARCON is ready and willing to participate in lectures, seminars and other capacity-building activities organised by the command.
