NPF Pensions expand customer service, seek better retirement deals for police officers

Pension

NPF Pensions has stepped up efforts to improve services to serving and retired police officers, including direct engagement with contributors, digital access to pension services and support programmes designed to ease the transition into retirement.

Speaking at the 2026 Customer Service Week in Abuja, the Acting Managing Director of NPF Pensions, Muhammed Dutse, said the pension fund administrator had also intensified engagement with police officers and retirees as discussions continue over measures to improve the retirement benefits of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the company was implementing a more direct customer-relations strategy under which senior management and staff were assigned contributors to engage regularly.

At the same time, the company introduced a WhatsApp for Business platform to make pension services accessible to police officers through their mobile phones.

According to him, almost 100,000 police officers had already been onboarded onto the platform, with the number increasing daily.

He said the objective was to reduce the need for customers to visit NPF Pensions’ offices to access basic services, stressing that pension services should be available to contributors wherever they were.

The managing director also said the company has maintained strong investment performance over the past five years, recording an average annual return of about 24 per cent, with returns reaching almost 37 per cent in one year.

He attributed the performance to a diversified investment strategy that includes traditional instruments as well as private equity, infrastructure funds and equities.

With the Central Bank of Nigeria’s monetary policy rate (MPR) having been reviewed, he said NPF Pensions was assessing alternative investment opportunities to sustain returns for contributors.

“We are looking into all these opportunities to strengthen our investment positions and also maintain the investment returns that we have achieved over the years,” he said.

The NPF Pensions boss said the company was also concerned about the adequacy of retirement benefits received by police retirees, acknowledging that some customers remained dissatisfied with the current pension arrangements.

He said the Federal Government was reviewing the situation, with a presidential committee working on measures to improve retirees’ take-home pay.

While declining to disclose details of the proposed arrangement, he urged police retirees to be patient, saying the company was working with relevant authorities to address outstanding concerns.

He said recent government interventions, including the settlement of pension arrears and consequential adjustments to pensions, showed increased attention to pensioners’ welfare.

Beyond pension administration, he said NPF Pensions had run a Retirement Resettlement Support Programme to assist police retirees facing delays between retirement and the start of their pension payments.

The programme, he said, had benefited thousands of retired police officers. He added that the company had also incorporated financial and livelihood preparation into its pre-retirement seminars, equipping police officers with knowledge and skills to generate additional income after retirement.

Beneficiaries had received training in areas including poultry farming, agriculture and other small-scale businesses, he said.

The managing director said NPF Pensions would continue to explore additional initiatives to improve the welfare and financial security of police retirees.

He also stressed the importance of collaborating with the media to communicate pension reforms, investment developments, and customer-service initiatives to police officers and the wider public.

On its relationship with retired police officers’ associations, he said NPF Pensions maintained cordial relations with the various associations and had held several engagements with them, sometimes jointly with police authorities, to address issues affecting retirees.

He said the company remained committed to transparency and continuous engagement with the associations as part of efforts to resolve outstanding pension-related concerns.
