A mild drama unfolded at the Anambra State High Court, Awka, when supporters of the embattled General Overseer of Dayspring Assembly, Awada-Obosi, Pastor Harrison Anazodo, allegedly attacked journalists covering his court proceedings.
At least three journalists reportedly had their phones and cameras damaged during the altercation as supporters attempted to shield Anazodo from the media while he entered the courtroom.
The supporters allegedly used wrappers and their bodies to block journalists and cameramen from filming the pastor, while pushing some members of the press.
They subsequently occupied available spaces in the courtroom, leaving limited room for journalists and other observers.
Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, condemned the incident and said it would be reported to law enforcement authorities.
Nweke said he had drawn the attention of the court to the incident because the court premises were public spaces where journalists should be allowed to perform their duties.
He said the media had a responsibility to report proceedings and should not be subjected to harassment.
According to him, counsel to Anazodo apologised to him, the journalists and the court and agreed to replace the damaged gadgets.
Nweke said the court subsequently accepted the apology and directed that the damaged equipment be replaced.
He added that the court ordered that proceedings remain open to the press and the public, warning that journalists must not be harassed during subsequent hearings.
Anazodo was arrested by officials of the Anambra State Government on June 10, 2026, and is facing trial before Justice Jude Obiora on a seven-count charge.
The charges include allegations bordering on propagating the accumulation of wealth through supernatural means, an act proscribed by the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025.
He is also facing allegations relating to murder, abduction and the unlawful separation and isolation of individuals from their families.
