Towards driver fitness and preventive road safety, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in collaboration with BATMedics, has carried out comprehensive eye tests on 500 drivers and motorists.
The move was part of a National Driver Health and Road Safety Outreach held in Abuja to commemorate World Sight Day 2026. Held beside Jabi Park, the intervention brought together road safety and public health officials to address visual impairment among motorists, which could lead to fatal accidents.
The programme featured free medical screening, with beneficiaries receiving professional assessments and appropriate medical guidance, while cases requiring further intervention could receive subsequent treatment and surgical support.
Speaking at the forum, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, reaffirmed the agency’s determination to move road safety from a predominantly enforcement-driven model to one anchored in prevention, early intervention, and human well-being.
Shehu, represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Special Duties and External Relations, ACM Ibrahim Bazama, stressed that a driver must constantly identify road signs, pedestrians, traffic signals, vehicles, obstacles and changing road conditions often within fractions of a second.
Also, the Director-General of BATMedics, Ojeje Onimisi, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting interventions that improve the health, safety and productivity of Nigerians, particularly those whose daily responsibilities place them at the centre of the nation’s transportation system.
