• Optometrists, Council mark World Sight Day with free eye screening, over 1000 glasses
The Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Moyosore Adebanjo has thanked the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) for partnering with his LCDA to bring free eye care to residents and helped him cater for the wellbeing of his constituents.
Speaking during an event to mark the 2026 World Sight Day with a walk and eye screening exercise organised by NOA in partnership with the Onigbongbo LCDA, Adebanjo said: “This reinforces the fact that we are committed to caring for members of our community and taking good care of their sight, particularly to commemorate the World Sight Day.
“And it is interesting to know that the Nigerian Optimistic Association, Lagos Chapter, is doing this in partnership with my local council. It could have been any other local council, but because of our interest and our readiness to partner and look after members of our community, that’s why we have domiciled this initiative within my local council development area. What else can I say, than to speak to the fact that we are more than ready and committed to the well-being of members of our community.”
The free eye screening exercises were carried out in four locations simultaneously in Ikeja, Festac, Ajah and Alimosho.
Speaking on the initiative, the Chairperson, NOA Lagos Chapter, Dr. Ghenorhe Ehimen, stated that the association marked the 2026 World Sight Day to create awareness and check preventable and avoidable causes of blindness. She added that free eye screening, eye care and eyeglasses would be provided for about 1200 beneficiaries of Lagos.
She further said that the goal is to get more residents to love their eyes through taking good care of their eyes, which is part of giving back to the society by members of the association.
She maintained that Lagosians need to have proper eye examinations once they start noticing a change in their vision, by visiting a clinic and not wish the problem away.
She added: “Your eye care is important. If you see clearly, then you can work better. If you see clearly, then your future is brighter. If you see clearly, then you can be more productive to the society.”
Ehimen thanked the Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council, Moyosore Adebanjo, for partnership with the NOA to cater for 500 beneficiaries that were attended to in Ikeja alone. She disclosed that at least 200 beneficiaries each would be attended to in the other three locations. She was excited that the chairman has not only provided 500 eyeglasses but also pledged to provide support for any beneficiary that needs surgeries.
Before screening the eyes of the beneficiaries at the Ikeja location, centre of one of the exercise, there was a walk from Allen Junction to Onigbongbo LCDA Secretariat on Community Road, Ikeja, creating awareness about the World Sight Day, educating residents and passersby about the importance of loving their eyes through talks and fliers.
