Onitsha agog for Ofala Festival

From October 10, Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra State, will be agog with festivies, as the town observes the yealy Ofala Festival of His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, mni, Obi of Onitsha. The Steering Committee announced the official programme of events for the 25th Ofala on October 5, 2026 .

This year’s event, themed Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru – Strive, and Advance: From Resilience to Progress, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Ofala from a sacred rite of renewal for the Obi into a platform for collective progress of Ndi Onicha.

The committee had earlier unveiled the official logo and theme for the 2026 edition. The logo is a royal, cultural, and premium visual statement developed to reflect the strength of an institution that has endured over 500 years, yet remains relevant, progressive, and unifying.

“Igba mbo, iga n’iru is both a charge and a celebration,” said Chief (Dr.) Okechukwu Mike Areh, Onya Ozoma of Onitsha, Chairman Ofala Steering Committee.

“For 500 years, our forebears strove to build, protect, and sustain the Onitsha Kingdom. Today, we are called to advance that legacy through culture, enterprise, youth development, and unity. This Ofala, we honour the past by building the future,”said Areh.

“The logo was conceptualised to show that Ofala is not only a celebration of tradition. It is a living system of identity, leadership, order, resilience, and advancement. It holds the people together while reminding them that heritage is not static; it is a foundation for movement.

“The swords represent royal authority, protection, and continuity. The beads speak to identity, honour, and cultural belonging. The central plate carries the message with the dignity of a royal proclamation.

“The line-up of Agbogidi, red-chiefs, and attendants captures the sacred moment of readiness before the monarch appears before his people. The white sculptural relief gives a refined heritage feel, while the purple accents reinforce royalty and the Ofala brand identity,” he said.

“Every element was intentionally placed to connect the throne, the people, the culture, and the future, “the Committee noted. “Ofala 2026 is heritage in motion. Rooted in royalty. Built on resilience. Moving toward progress.”

Areh said the 2026 theme builds on last year’s Njiko na Ntachi – Unity and Resilience. “For over 500 years, Ndi Onicha have shown igba mbo – resilience. Through every challenge we endured, adapted, and rose again. In 2026, we move forward to iga n’iru – deliberate progress. This is our charge: strive in your craft, advance your community. Let personal effort build our Kingdom,” he said.

The events of 2026 began on Wednesday, October 7, with the yearly seclusion of the Obi of Onitsha — the most sacred and private moment in the Ofala ceremonial cycle. For the following native week days: Oye, Afor, Nkwo, and Eke, the monarch is incommunicado as he negotiates the fortunes of the kingdom with the ancestors. A feast of atonement for brave men, particularly Ndichie and big game hunters on Saturday. It signals the final countdown to Ofala and is the formal announcement of public festivities.

The Obi’s ceremonial emergence from spiritual seclusion after successfully negotiating the fortunes of the kingdom is
Sunday. This sacred rite marks the end of the Umato period and the Obi’s return to his people.

From Monday, October 12 to Thursday, October 15, 2026, there will be a community-focused health initiative offering medical screenings, health education, and wellbeing services.

Also, betweenTuesday, October 13 to Sunday, October 18, 2026, an international art exhibition showcasing contemporary and traditional works, Oreze Art Exhibition, holds. Oreze positions Onitsha as a hub for culture, creativity, and dialogue.

A youth carnival is lined up for Wednesday, October 14, 2026. the carnival is a vibrant celebration of music, dance, fashion, and talent by Onitsha youth, drawing from the traditional Igbo Ilo.

Iru Ofala is scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026. this is the highpoint of the Ofala Festival. The Obi makes his first public appearance after seclusion, blesses his people, receives homage, and declares the theme: Igba Mbo, Iga n’Iru. Azu Ofala is Saturday, October 17, 2026. it is the second day of the grand public celebration, featuring continued homage, cultural performances, masquerades, and community engagement at Ime Obi.

On the festival identity, Chief Areh added: “Our logo reflects this journey: the swords of authority and continuity, the beads of identity and honour, and the royal proclamation at its centre. It is a heritage that is not static, but in motion – rooted in royalty, built on resilience, moving toward progress.”
