Marriage and Money Summit 2.0: Afolabi urges couples to combine love with financial wisdom

Household economist and family advocate, Dr. Adetutu Afolabi, has urged couples to combine love with financial intelligence, emotional intimacy, intentional parenting and legal awareness to build stable marriages and secure generational wealth.

Afolabi made the call at the Marriage and Money Summit 2.0, where experts examined the interconnected roles of finance, sex, parenting and family law in building stronger relationships and sustainable households.

She said successful marriages required more than affection, stressing that couples must embrace shared financial responsibilities, effective communication and a common vision for their families.

“A successful marriage is not built on love alone. It requires financial wisdom, emotional connection, healthy intimacy, intentional parenting and an understanding of the legal responsibilities that protect the family,” she said.

According to her, couples must recognise that decisions made within the home have far-reaching consequences for their relationships, financial stability and children’s future.

“When couples understand that every decision made within the home has emotional, financial and generational consequences, they begin to approach marriage as a collaborative partnership rather than an individual struggle,” Afolabi added.

The summit brought together speakers, including Pastor Bisi Adewale, Akinropo Akinola, Ifeanyi Maduka, Dr. Victor Afolabi, Dr. Pamela Udoka and Barrister Bisi Adebayo, who shared perspectives on relationship management, household finances, sexual intimacy, parenting and family asset protection.

Discussions also focused on financial literacy for couples, wealth creation, marital communication and strategies for building and preserving generational wealth.

Afolabi, who advocates treating the family as an important economic unit, said household prosperity depended on how couples managed their resources, relationships and shared responsibilities.

She maintained that cooperation between partners could improve financial outcomes and help families achieve goals that might be difficult for either partner to accomplish alone.

The summit also challenged singles and engaged couples to discuss financial expectations, intimacy, parenting values and long-term aspirations before marriage.

According to Afolabi, intentional conversations before marriage could help prospective couples establish common ground on critical issues that often become sources of conflict after they begin living together.

For married couples, the emphasis was on replacing financial secrecy, unhealthy competition and emotional disconnection with transparency, teamwork and shared purpose.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of sexual intimacy and open communication in sustaining healthy relationships, alongside deliberate parenting strategies to prepare children for responsible adulthood.

On family law, participants examined the need for couples to understand their legal responsibilities and take steps to protect family assets, particularly as they build wealth and plan for future generations.

Afolabi stressed that family development should not be viewed solely as a private concern, arguing that stable and financially secure households could contribute to broader social and economic progress.

“Stronger families contribute to stronger communities,” she said, underscoring the importance of marriage education, household financial literacy and family empowerment.

The summit reinforced her advocacy for financially informed households, emotionally healthy relationships and resilient families.

The central message was that while love could bring couples together, financial wisdom, intentional partnership and shared responsibility were essential to sustaining their unions and building a lasting family legacy.
